Cleaning your retractor? Here's how to flush your Gear Keeper correctly.
Gear Keeper retractors are specifically designed for use in saltwater environments. However, to extend the life of your retractor, regular flushing is essential – especially after use in salt, sand, or dirt.
Salt crystals and sand particles can accumulate in the metal parts. Rinsing your retractor thoroughly prevents seizing and wear.
Flushing: How to clean your retractor in 4 steps
Gear Keeper retractors feature a patented flushing system that easily removes salt, sand, and dirt. Here's how it works:
-
Rinse in salt water after use
Pull the cord out several times (5-10 times) and let it rewind in clean tap water. This will remove salt residue from the inside. -
Is there sand or dirt in it?
Immerse the retractor in clean water with the cord pointing upward. Allow the housing to fill with water. -
Turn and flush
Turn the retractor over and move the cord quickly back and forth (5-10 times). Repeat this process until the mechanism works smoothly again. -
Repeat if necessary
Is the operation still difficult? Repeat steps 2 and 3 until all contamination is removed.
