Gear Keeper retractors with various tools attached

There's nothing more frustrating than not being able to find your tool, access card, or dive console when you need it—or worse, dropping something in the water or somewhere out of reach. With a Gear Keeper retractor, a retractable lanyard that retracts automatically, you have your tools safely, quickly, and clearly within reach. No searching, no losing—just grab, use, and let go—the retractor takes care of the rest.

What is a Gear Keeper retractor?

A Gear Keeper is a robust roll-up system with smart attachment options at the top, such as a snap clip, carabiner, belt clip or other attachment for your clothing, equipment, bag, backpack, etc. and a sturdy Quick Connect connection at the bottom.

How does a retractor work?

Suppose you have a retractor with a split ring to which you attach a key ring. Depending on the type of attachment, you can attach the retractor to your belt. As you stand in front of a door that needs to be unlocked, you grab the key ring with your hand and pull it towards the lock. The Kevlar or stainless steel line will extend from the retractor as far as you pull it, or as far as it's long. You turn the lock with the correct key and remove the key. As you move the key ring back, you'll notice the retractor automatically rewind the line into its housing. Now, you could theoretically drop the key ring from your hand as soon as you remove the key; the retractor will rewind it.

What objects can I hang on a retractor?

A retractor lets you hang anything—from tools to microphones, ID cards to fishing pliers , and walkie-talkies to dive consoles —without worrying about it getting in the way, getting lost, or falling down. Thanks to the automatic retraction mechanism, your gear is always securely and safely in place.

Which confirmation should I choose?

That depends entirely on where you want to hang the retractor. You can easily attach a snap clip to a D-ring, buttonhole, belt loop, or other opening, for example. Our advice: consider the following points; this might help you make a decision more quickly:

  1. What do you want to use it for?
  2. What clothing or equipment do you most often wear when using the retractor?
  3. Will you also use the retractor for other applications?

Below you'll find an overview of various fasteners. While not all of them are included, this does represent a large number of them. From left to right: snap clip, hook-and-loop fastener, snap clip, rotating stainless steel belt clip, and screw pin.

How do I choose the right retractor for my application?

At the bottom of this page, you'll find a table listing the Gear Keeper retractors of the RT2, RT3, RT4, and RT5 types. There are also a few models specifically for retail use, which are not listed here.

  1. What object do you want to hang on it?
  2. What is the weight of the item? (If you want to switch between multiple items, keep this in mind.)
  3. How long should the retractable leash be?

There's a suitable retractor for almost every application. Whether you're a professional or a hobbyist, Gear Keeper retractors are useful in a wide variety of situations:

What is retraction force and why is it important?

The retraction force of a Gear Keeper retractor is the force with which the internal spring system pulls the line back into the housing. It's a balance between two important factors:

  • Comfortable use : You should be able to easily pull out and use the item (e.g. a tool, flashlight or other accessory) without the spring working too hard.
  • Retraction force: The spring must be strong enough to automatically pull the object back into the retractor after use, so that it remains neatly and securely in place.

Please note: the retraction force is not the same as the breaking strength.

Retraction force vs. breaking strength

  • Retraction force: The force with which the cord retracts (e.g., 255 grams). This determines the maximum weight the object can be for comfortable and effective use.
  • Breaking strength: The maximum force required to break the line (often several kilograms). This indicates the strength of the line, but is not intended as a guideline for the weight of the object.

Practical example

Suppose you have a retractor with a retraction force of 255 grams. You could theoretically hang a 500-gram object from it – the line will physically hold the weight (due to its higher breaking strength), but:

  • The spring does not have enough force to retract the object.
  • The object gets stuck and is no longer automatically pulled towards the housing.
  • This may reduce the comfort and effectiveness of the retractor.

Advice

Choose a retractor with a retraction force that matches the weight of the object you want to hang on it. This will ensure the system continues to function properly and you benefit from optimal ease of use.
