There's nothing more frustrating than not being able to find your tools, access pass, or dive console when you need them — or worse: dropping something into the water or in a place you can't reach. With a Gear Keeper retractor, a retractable line that automatically retracts, you'll have your tools safe, quickly accessible, and organized. No searching, no loss – just grab, use, and release — the retractor system takes care of the rest.
What is a Gear Keeper retractor?
A Gear Keeper is a robust retractable system with smart attachment options at the top, such as a snap clip, carabiner, belt clip, or other attachment for your clothing, gear, bag, backpack, etc., and a sturdy Quick Connect attachment at the bottom.
How does a retractor work?
Imagine you have a retractor with a split ring to which you've attached a set of keys. Depending on the type of attachment, you can attach the retractor to your belt. As soon as you're in front of a door that you need to unlock, you grab the keys and pull them towards the lock. The Kevlar or stainless steel line will extend from the retractor as far as you pull it or as far as it is long. You unlock the door with the correct key and remove the key. When you move the keys back, you'll notice that the retractor automatically retracts the line back into its housing. Theoretically, you could let go of the keys once you've removed them from the lock; the retractor will wind them back up.
Which items can I attach to a retractor?
You can attach anything to a retractor — from tools to microphones, from ID cards to fishing pliers, and from walkie-talkies to dive consoles — without worrying about them getting in the way, getting lost, or falling down. Thanks to the automatic retraction mechanism, your gear always hangs securely and neatly in place.
Which attachment should I choose?
That depends entirely on where you want to attach the retractor. For example, you can easily attach a snap clip to a D-ring, buttonhole, belt loop, or other opening. Our advice is to consider the following points, which might help you make a quicker decision:
- What do you want to use it for?
- What clothing or gear do you wear most often when using the retractor?
- Will you be using the retractor for other applications?
Below you'll see an overview of different attachments; these are not all of them, but a large portion of the types. From left to right: snap clip, Velcro, snap clip, rotating stainless steel belt clip, and screw pin.

How do I choose the right retractor for my application?
At the bottom of this page, you will find a table with an overview of Gear Keeper retractors of types RT2, RT3, RT4, and RT5. Additionally, there are a few models specifically for retail use, which are not listed here.
- What item do you want to attach to it?
- What is the weight of the item? (If you want to switch between multiple items, consider that too)
- How long should the retractable line be?
There is a suitable retractor for almost every application. Whether you are professionally active or pursuing a hobby, Gear Keeper retractors are applicable in a wide variety of situations:
What is retraction force and why is it important?
The retraction force of a Gear Keeper retractor is the force with which the internal spring system pulls the line back into the housing. It is a balance between two important factors:
- Comfortable use: You must be able to easily pull out and use the item (e.g., a tool, flashlight, or other accessory) without the spring resisting too much.
- Retraction force: The spring must be powerful enough to automatically pull the item back to the retractor after use, so it remains neatly and securely in place.
Please note: retraction force is not the same as breaking strength.
Retraction force vs. breaking strength
- Retraction force: The force with which the cord retracts (e.g., 255 grams). This determines the maximum weight the item can be for comfortable and effective use.
- Breaking strength: The maximum force required for the line to snap (often several kilograms). This indicates the strength of the cord but is not intended as a guideline for the weight of the item.
Practical example
Imagine you have a retractor with a retraction force of 255 grams. Theoretically, you could attach an item weighing 500 grams to it – the line would physically hold the weight (due to the higher breaking strength), but:
- The spring will not have enough force to retract the item.
- The item will remain hanging and will no longer be automatically pulled back into the housing.
- This can reduce the comfort of carrying and the functionality of the retractor.
Advice
Choose a retractor where the retraction force matches the weight of the item you want to attach to it. This ensures the system functions correctly and you benefit optimally from its ease of use.
